Find out how smells can lower stress.

September 29, 2017

Did you know that the olfactory system is one of the most beneficial ways to get into our brains?

Hold up!

Firstly, what the heck is the olfactory system?

And how does it get into our brains?

The olfactory system, or sense of smell, is the part of the sensory system used for smelling (olfaction).

'It’s thought that the significant effects of smell on the brain are a relic of the life-and-death importance that smell had for early man. Those smell cells in the nose are linked to the limbic system - which in evolutionary terms is among the oldest parts of the brain - which governs emotions, behaviour and long-term memory.' (1)

So what are the best 'smells' we can have to reduce anxiety and stress?

Sarah Leys from 'Young Living', has put together a few blends of essential oils that may help you during some of the more stressful times of your life.

Pop these in a diffuser and feel the calm overcome you.

Calming/grounding blend:

3 drops Cedarwood

2 drops Patchouli

3 drops Lavender

Pop in diffuser and run for 30-60 mins. Great for during meditation.

Unwind:

3 drops Lavender

3 dops Stress Away

3 drops Copaiba

Pop in diffuser and run for 1 hours increments, 3 times a day.

Be Happy:

3 drops Joy

3 drops Stress Away

Pop in diffuser let run.

She also recommends:

- Lemon and Lavender for uplifting in the morning.

- Lavender and Cedarwood in the evening for quiet time.

- White Angelica, a personal favourite. It supports the relief of anxious feelings, makes her feel like she can do anything.
